Alma Del Sur is a collection of music of South America featuring Ancient Future, Bernardo Rubaja, Junior Homrich, Rumillajta, Nando Lauria, Gurrufio, Carlos Guedes, and Roberto Perera, with liner notes by Javier Pérez de Cuéllar (Secretary-General, United Nations, 1981-1991).
Ancient Future contributed one selection, "El Gatillo y el Armadillo" (The Kitten and the Armadillo), which acquired its title after Ancient Future's founder, Matthew Montfort, became amused by his kitten's playful response to the sound of the charango, a small lute traditionally made from the shell of an armadillo. The track also features Gonzalo Vargas (internationally recognized panpipe virtuoso), Jeff Narell (pan drums), and Ian Dogole (percussion).
Quotes
"This marvelous collection displays the many colors of South American music, and the subtle shadings and differences between the musics of various regions. Each artist has his own combo, and each group has a different percussion setup, which makes for very interesting listening. Ancient Future features Ian Dogole on a combination of kit and hand drums, along with steel drummer Jeff Narell (brother of Andy). There is much for the student of world music to learn here in terms of arrangement, dynamics, and musicality-and this might be the most pleasant music lesson you could have."
– Robin Tolleson, Modern Drummer (January 93)

Guitar Works is a collection of instrumental music for guitar featuring the leader of Ancient Future, Matthew Montfort, on one selection, "Amber." The piece showcases Montfort on scalloped fretboard guitar, an instrument combining aspects of the South Indian vina and the steel string guitar to allow for greater note bending capabilities. "Amber" has been the theme song for the KPFA radio show Cover to Cover for almost three decades.
