Ancient Future Hendrix History

James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix; November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970)

On September 18, 1970, a 12-year-old Matthew Montfort was home sick listening to the radio when the announcement came on that one of his main inspirations for playing guitar, Jimi Hendrix, had passed away. In spite of not feeling well, he got out his guitar and spent the rest of the day playing the Jim Hendrix pieces that he had learned, including "Purple Haze."

Montfort's younger brother, classical piano virtuoso and composer Seth Montfort, recalled this in a recent Facebook comment: "I was just 8 years old, but your reaction the day he died is something I will never forget. Plus I feel like I know all his music and then when you were at Boulder High School, I will always remember seeing you play in Jesus Christ Superstar and thinking you were like perfectly embodying a Jesus Hendrix style."

At the age of 13, Montfort decided to focus his studies on jazz and classical music to improve his musicianship and incorporate what he learned into rock music. Soon thereafter, progressive rock and jazz-rock fusion exploded with amazing artists exploring new directions. In high school, Montfort had the idea to study music from around the world to further expand the possibilities of fusion music. He wanted to be involved in making music that had a chance of helping humanity by showing how ideas from different cultures could work together. He coined the term world fusion music for this new path in music, which became his life's work.

But the influence of Hendrix stayed with Montfort, and when Ancient Future shared the stage with Los Lobos and Zakir Hussain at the Monterey World One Festival on June 8, 1997, he made sure to stand in the spot where Jimi Hendrix had famously burned his guitar at the Monterrey Pop Festival three decades before on June 18, 1967, so he could feel the reverberations of history.

There he was reminded of seeing pictures of Jimi Hendrix watching Ravi Shankar perform at Monterey Pops. Montfort said this about that in an interview in the December 2009 issue of Guitar Player Magazine, "I began to think about the intersection between raga and the music of Jimi Hendrix after seeing a photograph of Jimi in the front row of an Indian music concert, his mouth agape in awe of what he was experiencing. Then one day a student of mine was having difficulty improvising over the chord changes in 'Purple Haze,' and I had the idea that the techniques learned by studying Indian music would help my student to improvise more effectively." Wondering what would have happened had Hendrix studied Indian raga, Montfort created a set of raga rules based on Indian music and Woodstock era electric blues that he calls "Purple Raga." Each performance is unique, but evokes a similar mood. When Montfort recorded his debut solo album, Seven Serenades for Scalloped Fretboard Guitar, he included a serenade to the spirit of Jimi Hendrix. This led to Montfort's feature in Guitar Player Magazine, which linked to a video on GuitarPlayer.Com of his performance of "Purple Raga" at Ancient Future's 30th Anniversary concert on his Godin Glissentar, an 11 string fretless guitar.

Then on September 23, 2010, four decades after Hendrix passed away, Montfort invited Bui Huu Nhut, who was visiting the area, to perform "Purple Raga" and "Purple Haze" with him on Vietnamese đàn bầu (a one string instrument with a whammy bar) at the Music for Thingamjigs Festival in San Francisco. They were a big hit with the audience and part of their performance was even shown on The Rachel Maddow Show the next day! They decided to record a Vietnamese version of "Purple Haze," and on October 9, 2011, the next time that Bui Huu Nhut visited the San Francisco Bay Area, they did just that.

Purple Playlists

Many music streaming algorithms suggest music similar to what listeners stream already, which can keep music fans in limited genre boxes. This is the opposite of the purpose of world fusion music, which is about expanding musical tastes. A grassroots playlisting campaign is needed to counteract this. Searches for curated playlists that feature world fusion music revealed around 200 playlists, but contact information was available for only 10% of the curators. A network of thousands of curators will be needed to overcome the bias of streaming algorithms, so there's much work left to do. While streaming isn't currently financially helpful except to mega famous artists and some who make music for specific activities, it's still very important for world fusion music to be properly represented on streaming services. Please help by adding Ancient Future to your playlists using the links below.

What's an Instant Grat?

It's the ability to download a track from a release on iTunes and Amazon before it's release, and have that download count on Internet music charts on the sales date. This means that people can enjoy ownership and listen to the track as much as they like before the sales date and after! In honor of Jimi Hendrix's 82nd birthday, the Instant Grats day for "Purple Haze" is November 27, 2024. With Internet access often at risk due to hacking, outages, and global conflicts, music ownership through downloads allows people to enjoy music even when the Internet is down. Each download supports the music financially, whereas it takes millions of streams to bring in significant income to artists. For example, 1,708,584 streams of a track by Ancient Future on YouTube Music netted Ancient Future only $101.16. That's less than 6/1000 of a cent per stream! Yes, thousandths of a cent!

Ancient Traditions--Future Possibilities Book

Ancient Traditions – Future Possibilities: Rhythmic Training Through the Traditions of Africa, Bali and India by Matthew Montfort. Book/Enhanced Audio CD Set with MIDI Soundfiles: $52.95 (SALE! Normally $69.95): Buy Link.

"You've heard Afro-Pop, sitar, gamelan and world music for years. But do you know what they are and how they work? Better yet, would you like to play those twisted cross-rhythms and melodies? In Ancient Traditions--Future Possibilities, Matthew Montfort, a founding member of the world music band Ancient Future, has put together the book for people who want to dig into world music with both hands. The first section of the book covers traditional music of West Africa, Bali and India with theories and exercises. Wherever possible, Montfort has provided beat counts alongside the standard musical notation so even if you can't read music, you can still learn the rhythms. The last section of the book mixes patterns from different cultures, demonstrating the powerful music these simple exercises can generate." – Richard Kadrey, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

Existential Threats to the Art of Music in the Digital Age

How You Can Help Mitigate Them

It's well known that the extremely low payouts from streaming platforms to artists has caused harm to musicians. Algorithms suggest music that sounds exactly like what listeners are already streaming to keep them on the platforms longer, so they may never be exposed to many forms of high quality music that they otherwise would acquire a taste for. Add to that the use of generative A.I. to create music, and the human art of music is facing an existential threat. This April, the Artist Rights Alliance released a widely publicized letter signed by 200 artists ranging from Billie Eilish to Ancient Future leader Matthew Montfort urging tech platforms to cease the use of A.I. to devalue the rights of human artists.

Making money by touring is a solution that tech companies often point to. But even before the pandemic, artist fees were dropping because many famous artists were forced to constantly tour to be able to afford to pay their mortgages once their royalties were paid in thousandths of a cent increments. While the pandemic isn't over, the lockdowns are and live concerts have returned. But a large percentage of the venues and presenters that booked world music and jazz never reopened, and those that did reopen typically hold fewer events and focus on more mainstream acts to try to make up for lost income. Some presenters of the fine arts had grants that helped to pay artist guarantees, but those grants have for the most part dried up. The result of all of this is that tours are even more difficult to arrange and there's a high risk of losing money. Artist fees for local concerts were cut while gas prices rose, so many of the gigs that are available barely pay for travel costs to rehearsals and the venue.

This is all disheartening, but there are some things that you can do to help:

  1. Encourage people you know to subscribe to email lists of the artists you enjoy so that they can reach fans without paying social media companies. Please ask your friends to subscribe to the Ancient Future Times:
  2. Make donations directly to artists:
    • Make a Tax Deductible Donation. Ancient Future enjoys a fiscal sponsorship with InterMusic SF, a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization. Donations made through them on behalf of Ancient Future are 100% tax deductible to the full extent of the law!
    • Support the Archive of Future Ancient Recordings, Ancient Future's fan funded recording project.
  3. Make your own playlists featuring world fusion music on streaming sites to counteract algorithms designed to keep listeners in tiny genre boxes. Here are the Ancient Future pages on some of the popular streaming sites:
  4. Share artist's posts on social media so that they don't have to pay for people to see them. Here are the Ancient Future pages on some of the popular social media sites:
    • https://www.facebook.com/ancientfuture (Facebook). Ancient Future was unable to post on Facebook for over a year because of a hack. The hack was reported immediately, but when access was finally restored, Ancient Future was banned from advertising due to an algorithm that found that the hackers had violated community standards! Reposting is now the only way to promote Ancient Future's Facebook posts. The good news is that we won't be giving Meta any money.
    • https://www.instagram.com/ancientfutureband (Instagram). Also owned by Meta.
    • https://bsky.app/profile/ancientfuturemusic.bsky.social (Bluesky). Ancient Future's new page on Bluesky, where a world music community is in the early stages of creation.
    • https://ethnocloud.com/Ancient_Future (Ethnocloud). This is a great site to find out about world music artists to add to your playlists!
    • https://twitter.com/ancient_future (X-Twitter). Twitter was never a great place for world fusion music posts, but it's even worse now that it's X. Ancient Future is pausing posting new content due to new terms giving X rights to creators content for A.I. development. But if you are still on it, use it to spread some positive content, and post comments on Ancient Future's X page. For example, you can post links to Ancient Future's current social media pages.

Added that Bass, Now Treble!

The Archive of Future Ancient Recordings, Ancient Future's fan funded recording project, already has 101 minutes of music in it available exclusively to supporters. But there's also well over an hour of music in production awaiting final overdubs, and with help from a recent donation to the cause, upright bass has been added to Fretless Camel, Rasa Flamenca, Ruperías, and Innocent Explorations. It's time to add treble instruments and percussion!

Ancient Future has a soundproof studio location about 90 minutes north of the Golden Gate Bridge, but many of Ancient Future's musicians reside to the south, so with the cost of gas and frequently stalled traffic, it's been difficult to schedule musicians and pay for their travel costs and time. You can help by becoming a supporter!
